What is headache?

There are 2 types of headaches:

  • Headache can be caused by another disease (e.g. acute viral disease, sinusitis, high blood pressure). These types of headaches must be treated with the disease that caused them.
  • Other type is headache that is not a sign of other diseases. The most common are muscle overtension headache (neck muscles) and migraine (often accompanied by vomiting, nausea, etc).

How to help yourself?

  • Headaches are usually transient and very helpful is to take time off and give your body a break.
  • When necessary, an analgesic (paracetamol, ibuprofen) can be taken.
  • Most of the headache is related to muscle overtension/stiffness also, regular exercises (stretching) are good.

The family doctor/family nurse should be contacted when:

  • to receive home treatment recommendations
  • when the headache is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, tiredness and/or fever
  • when the headache has became stronger
  • headache is accompanied by symptoms / symptoms that have not previously occurred (such as vision problems, dizziness)
