What is nausea?

Nausea is an unpleasant symptom, which often ends with vomiting. Vomiting is an organism's defense reaction, which may occur resulting of irritation of stomach, for example, in the case of stomach virus or bacteria.

The most common causes of nausea and vomiting are:

  • viruses (the Norwalk, so-called Noro virus)
  • bacteria
  • food poisoning (arises quickly, up to 24 hours)
  • foreign object in pharyngeal
  • head trauma
  • high fever
  • side effects of drugs
  • pregnancy
  • some diseases (gastric ulcer)
  • psychological causes

Nausea and vomiting caused by viruses and bacteria can also be accompanied by abdominal pain and diarrhea.

How to relieve/treat?

  • Liquid replacement. It is important to have a lot of fluid intake, because multiple emesis involves fluid loss from your body. Special attention must be paid to children (under 3 years of age) and the elderly. The fluid needs to be taken up in small amounts, slowly and often. Very good and suitable for liquid replacement are water and a chamomile tea.
  • One should be eating slowly and small amounts case of nausea. In the case of nausea and vomiting, light foods, crackers or biscuits are suitable. When feeling better, you can start eating lighter meals, such as chicken soup, banana to give your body a break when using any medication (e.g. antiemetics), depends on the causes of nausea / vomiting.   • nausea and vomiting lasts for a long time

  • in case of an adverse drug reaction to modify the treatment, if necessary
  • if vomiting occurs after traveling or when eating unknown foods (e.g. mushrooms, berries)
  • to receive home treatment recommendations
